Presumed functional KIT variants were termed W13 to W17. Sequences were compared to the sequences of more than 100 horses from eight different breeds that had been obtained during our previous studies. PCR and DNA sequencing: We PCR‐amplified and sequenced all 21 exons including flanking regions of the equine KIT gene as previously described. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood or 15–20 hair bulbs. Animals: We analysed a total of 16 horses representing six different horse breeds in this study (two Paso Peruano, two Quarter Horses, one Thoroughbred, one Arabian, seven Oldenburger and three Japanese draft horses). To date, 14 functionally different KIT alleles have been characterized at the molecular level in the horse. KIT mutations also cause piebaldism in humans.
